A city in Essence County, Massachusetts, Methuen has a population of 47,255 as of the 2010 census. It is just east of Middlesex County and just south of Rockingham County. It was first settled in 1642 and officially incorporated in 1726, originally as part of Haverhill. It became its own town in 1725 after a public petition and had massive industrial growth in the early 1800s, resulting in small factories and the Methuen Cotton Mills at the Spicket River.
